If you are planning on travelling abroad and need travel insurance then there are some insurance pitfalls that you should be aware of before you go ahead and buy your holiday insurance policy.
It does not matter what age you are, whether you are getting travel insurance for over 70 year olds or whatever your particular circumstances are you need to look out for these potential pitfalls. Travel insurance policies usually cover a number of different things including loss and theft. When you lose your property on holiday or have something stolen you can usually make a claim on your insurance that will cover the cost of your valuables.
What you may not know is that there are certain circumstances that means you will not have a successful claim. Say you spend the day at the beach and the kids are paddling in the sea. One of the children starts crying so you naturally go over to them at the waters edge. Whilst you are attending to your children someone swipes your digital camera that you left where you were sitting.
If you tried to claim for the camera being stolen you may well find you are not covered. The reason for this is most policies provided by insurers do not cover items that are unattended. This is a grey area and you may not get a decent explanation if you query the insurer about it. Remember to check your policy detail to see there stance on unattended items.
Another thing to look out for is whether or not your policy will cover the loss of cash. Whilst many people these days use credit cards or travellers cheques some people will still carry an amount of cash with them.
You will find that many insurers will only cover a small amount of cash, maybe only up to 200 pounds. You may also need to be aware that there can also be a hefty excess on cash claims, some insurers may have as much as a 150 pounds excess or cash claims. This is usually to discourage people from making potentially fraudulent claims. Be sure to double check if cash is covered on the policy you are going to buy.
